NAEYC Scenarios
"NAEYC has 10 standards that define excellent programs for young children and an accreditation system to measure whether programs meet those standards." (NAEYC, 2006) These standards are very important to Helping Hands of Colorado and these are some ways that we will promote those 10 high quality standards into our school!
Relationships- When it comes to promoting positive relationships for all adults in the school it's important that we work together as a team. It's also important to use effective communication as well. We want our teachers to be as happy as possible while working in their classrooms. The administration team is here to help our teachers to make sure they are successful in their classrooms. When it comes to positive relationships with children it's important for all adults to have positive relationships with their students in their classroom. It's important to remember that if a child feels safe and secure in their environment then will be be able to learn so much better!
Curriculum- Our schools provides a curriculum that is "top notch". With our curriculum we foster all areas of child development such as cognitive, emotional, language, physical and social development. All of these aspects are very important for young children. We will include child initiated groups during our academic rotations as well as teacher directed activities for children to sit with teachers for a more "one on one" small group setting. We want to make sure that we are giving children what they need to love learning and achieve milestones!
Teaching- All of our teachers are very professional. Our teachers are certified by the State of Colorado as well as have experience teaching as well. Our teachers have gone through many trainings and understand how to keep children stimulated in the classroom as well as providing activities that are developmentally appropriate for each child in their classroom. Our management team and our teachers work closely together to make sure that we are providing the best educational experience for families in Colorado.
Assessment of Child Progress- Through out the day teachers will be working with students in their classrooms and will be making notes about different milestones that they hit. We have a full assessment that will be provided to parents twice a year that will give you dates as to when teachers noticed that they mastered an item. You will also see a "developing" portion of the assessment that will allow you to know the different items that your child is still working on for the remainder of the school year. For our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms we will have an additional assessment called the Bracken assessment which is a school readiness assessment. This will allow parents to see which concepts their child knows verses what they will be learning in these classrooms. We will have parent teacher conferences in the Fall and Spring for our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms. This is a great opportunity for parents to get an idea of where their child is at the beginning of school as well as the end of the school year. "To assess young children's strengths, progress, and needs, use assessment methods that are developmentally appropriate, culturally and linguistically responsive, tied to children's daily activities, supported by professional development, inclusive of families, and connected to specific, beneficial purposes: 1) Making sound decisions about teaching and learning, 2) Identifying significant concerns that may require focused intervention for individual children and, 3) Helping programs improve their educational and developmental interventions." (Gadzikowski, 2013)
Health- When it comes to health at our school we want to make sure that our children are getting nutritious meals through out the day. We will have early morning breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and late afternoon snack. We provide meals for students to make sure that their nutritional needs are being met on a daily bases here at school. If your child has a severe allergy we do allow parents to bring in items from home that their child may eat at school.
Teachers- Here at Helping Hands of Colorado we want to make sure that we are giving our teachers the best professional development that they can have. We will find qualified teaching staff for our classrooms and give them the tools they need to be successful. We will have two professional development days during the year. One will be in February and the other will be in August right before the start of school. Our management team will also be working with teachers through out the year to make sure that they are meeting the needs of their students as well as meeting their professional goals. We hold monthly staff meetings as well which give us an opportunity to have everyone together and talk about different activities that are coming up and different things to expect. We want to make sure that our staff is on the same page with everything that is happening inside of our school. "Teachers, indeed, possess a great power to influence, and as studies show, they can clearly shape America's future. They can impact how much students will ultimately earn, or prepare the next great mind to change the world. In that light, isn't teaching truly a top career, one of the most important and influential jobs a person can have?" (Parker, 2013)
Families- Our families are very important to our schools. We want to make our families feel welcome into our school as well as getting to know them. We want our families to know that we always have an open door policy and if they every have any concerns that they can come talk with a management team member or their child's teacher at any time. We also have an open door policy when it comes to parents going into their child's classroom. If you want to observe in your child's classroom that is something that we love for parents to do!
Community Relationships- When it comes to our community we want to make sure that we are supporting them as much as possible. Just recently our neighborhood golf course had an event that we sponsored. It was a great turn out and we want to make sure that we get the chance to be our in our community and giving back as much as possible!
Physical environment- When it comes to a safe and healthy physical environment we will make sure that we have developmentally appropriate materials for specific classrooms. We will also make sure that our classrooms and spaced and maintained for the children inside of them. It's important to have a clean and organized school which is something that we thrive upon. When you walk into our school you will notice the cleanliness as well as the organization through out the entire school. Our playgrounds are also developmentally appropriate for each age group as well. We have playground inspectors come every month to do routine checks on our playgrounds to make sure they are maintained and safe for all children.
Leadership and Management- We provided our staff the opportunity to do a few team building activities as well as learned about different classroom management ideas that we can each use in our classrooms. We also did trainings on our music program and our physical education program to give teachers different ideas to implement into their classrooms. During our trainings we have a lot of fun and we learn a lot too. Our teachers will give the management team different ideas for trainings that they would like to have. A few that we are in the process of would be a "sensory" training as well as behavior management trainings. It's important for us to provide our teachers lots of opportunities to be successful in their classrooms!
